Biography
Solange Roy is a francophone, Indigenous ceramic artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Solange obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours from the University of Manitoba in 2022. She won the People’s Choice award at the BFA Honours exhibition with her installation titled Table for One which featured several lifelike ceramic dessert sculptures. The centrepiece of this installation, a 3-tiered cake sculpture titled You Want a Piece of Me?, won the provincial prize for the BMO 1st Art! National Competition and was featured in an exhibition at the University of Toronto. Solange is currently an artist in residence at the Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics at Medalta in Medicine Hat, Alberta, until the end of January 2025. She is working on creating a new body of work for her upcoming solo exhibition in March 2025, in Winnipeg.
Solange was introduced to ceramics by her late high school art teacher Roberta Decock, and she immediately fell in love with the medium. After graduating high school, Solange enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the University of Manitoba where she majored in sculptural ceramics. During her four years at the University of Manitoba, Solange broadened her knowledge of ceramics by experimenting with various clays, glazes and firing methods.
Studio practice
Solange is currently working on her next sculptural collection for her upcoming solo exhibition at the CCFM in March 2025. Her studio practice specializes in highly detailed sculptural work using hand-building methods to create intricate, colourful, and unique pieces. For her upcoming exhibition, Solange will be expanding on her previous work creating realistic dessert sculptures.
